Column: Jason Gardner was a great hire by Pastner

Let me first say, congrats to Jason Gardner being hired as an assistant coach for the University of Memphis. It is a good feeling to see another guy from Arizona that will be bringing experience to Memphis. Honestly, this was a great hire by Pastner. Some of the fans are not liking this hire that well. To you fans, get over it because it is over and done.

There are some things people should know about Jason Gardner. First, he was an excellent guard at the University of Arizona from 1999 to 2003. He became the school’s all-time leader in games started, minutes played, games won and 3-point field goals. He was also part of the 2001 Wildcat team that lost in the national championship game against the Duke Blue Devils.

In his last year as a Wildcat, he averaged 14.8 points and 4.9 assists a game. He was simply a winner and no one can take that away from him. He is bringing experience and I am glad that he is on board with Memphis. With all of the guards Pastner will have to play, Gardner can help him sort out line-ups against their opponents.

As of right now, Memphis only has Joe Jackson as their premier guard. Hopefully, Michael Dixon has something left in the tank after he left Missouri. Which ever guard wants to learn how to be a great guard should follow in the direction of Gardner. He knows the ropes and what it takes to win. Memphis may have four guards to lead the team in scoring next season (Joe Jackson, Chris Crawford, Michael Dixon, Geron Johnson). The ball sharing could possibly be difficult to sort out, but Gardner can mode these guys on how to share the ball.

No matter what the people say, this was an awesome hire by Pastner. Pastner is still going the distance like Rocky. He has the staff and team to win. It seems like he finally has the ingredients to beat some top Division I schools. If the fans are not ready for next season, then that’s too bad because it is slowly approaching us.

As for me, I am pumped, excited, nervous, and worried at the same time. The only thing I have to say is “Let’s play ball.” GO TIGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
