Column: Two of the top recruits in the nation will attend Memphis Madness

Everyone stand up for a moment and give coach Josh Pastner a round of applause. So, y’all are not going to stand up? Well, okay then suit yourself, but I have great news. Memphis Madness will be something to watch because of the fans, players, and comments made by Pastner. But that is not the best news of the night. The news is concerning two prospects for the class of 2014.

During the summer, Cliff Alexander broke news that he will be visiting the University of Memphis during Memphis Madness. Alexander stands at 6-foot-8 and weighs 240-pounds coming straight out of Chicago attending Curie High School. He’s a beast in the paint and has good foot work. His strength is on the defensive end because he can rebound. He needs to work on his jump shot and once he gets that intact, then he will be hard to guard. There have been many ballers to come out of Chi-town like MJ, Benji, etc. Alexander could be the next big name to step into college basketball. According to Rivals.com, Alexander is ranked No. 4 in the country. He currently has 10 offers from D1 schools including Memphis. Memphis is definitely in the running to land Alexander and Madness at the FedEx Forum will probably persuade him to become a Tiger.

Another top prospect that will be coming along with Alexander will be Zylan Cheatham. Cheatham is also 6-foot-8 and weighs 205-pounds. He plays the forward position but, this guy has the ability to also play the shooting guard position. He’s representing Phoenix, AZ and is currently attending South Mountain High School. Rivals.com has Cheatham ranked No. 76 in the country for the class of 2014. With his athleticism, Cheatham could be a big help for Memphis on the perimeter.

I am definitely looking forward to seeing these guys at Memphis Madness. I will definitely be in attendance on October 18 to check out the Tigers. Thus far, Pastner has not nailed a recruit for next year’s class, but this is his best chance to impress two guys that he could definitely use in the Tigers’ line-up for the 2014-2015 season since he will be losing a core of his players from this season’s team.
